A public institution of national interest, the National Commission for Nuclear Activities Control (CNCAN) represents the nuclear regulatory authority  in Romania.

Developing its activities in accordance with the provisions of the Law no. 111/1996 on the safe deployment, regulation, authorization and control of nuclear activities, republished, with subsequent modifications and completions, CNCAN ensures the safe use of nuclear  energy in Romania, providing an adequate and appropriate level of nuclear and radiological safety in order to protect the population, the occupational exposed workers, the patients and last but not least, the environment from the  risks associated with the unfolding nuclear activities.

Through its carried out activities, our institution also contributes to the prevention of  risks inadequate to the national security, to the  compliance  with the international commitments assumed by Romania in this field, as well as to the  dissemination of scientific, technical and regulatory information in an objective  manner in order to ensure transparency in communication.

CNCAN ensures regulation, authorization and control of the activities related to the operation of the Cernavoda nuclear power plant, of the research reactors from Pitesti and Bucharest-Magurele, as well as the use of nuclear and radioactive materials in medicine, industry, research and agriculture.

In achieving its mission, CNCAN adheres to the principles of a proper regulatory activity - independence, openness, efficiency - which are applied in a realistic manner  and in accordance with the values ​​and organizational environment.

The period we are going through still remains marked by the events of March 2011 from the Fukushima Daichii nuclear power plant in Japan. The international community has raised awareness  on  a higher level the manner  nuclear energy is used and decided a review of  the nuclear safety of nuclear power plants at international level and the adoption of appropriate measures in an innovative maner  in order to strengthen the global nuclear safety regime.

It is a process to which our institution also participates, being firmly decided  to promote and apply a strong safety culture, to maintain the highest standards in nuclear safety and security field, as well as in the  field of radiological protection .

All these activities will lead to provide a stable regulatory system in which the decisional process related to nuclear safety issues is not compromised by considerations of another nature, reinforcing the position that our institution has gained  at national and international level.
